converting all letters in field to small letters?

Use either the StrConvert function or the LCase function.

Since you didn't say where - on a form, on a report, in a query - or when
that is about all anyone can tell you.

i want to do it in a query.
So the underlying data in the field is changed to lowercase

If you're running the query from inside of Access, you can use the LCase
function in the query.
