Disk or Network Error & Windows - Delayed Write failed Error

Hi,

We have Microsoft Access databases/files which are shared in a network
drive. Users are using Access 2003 from their workstations which are
using Windows XP Pro in a domain environment.

When accessing the Access files, they will encounter errors as in the
subject above.
We have followed the solution from
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?kbid=321733 but it does not
work.

The problem will occur when users open the file and use it for about
15-20 minutes. Recently the time when the errors are hit has become
shorter to 30 seconds.
Users have to close the files and open them up again to re-access. We
have tested with Excel and Word files in the network drive but they did
not give such problems. Only Access files are affected.
All users who are given access to these Access files are having the same
problem.

We would like to have advice on this issue.

I would split the database and distribute the front-end to your users. Not
only will this help immensely with network issues, but also prevent
corruption.

Are you suggesting that this is a network issue? It seems that only Access
files are affected. Are there any configuratiosn that can be done on the
client side (workstations) instead of disturbing the files in the server?
Could this be due to the timeoutsession of the workstation and how can we
rectify that?
What do you mean by 'distribute the front-end to users'?

Splitting will help with a lot of issues and it will reduce the
chances of corruption but it certainly won't prevent corruption.

Disk or Network Error usually means some sort of hard ware. Such as
an intermittently faulty network card or cable or something else.

Is this happening on only one, a few or all workstations? Are these
wireless connections?

Hi Tony,

It happened to all workstations and they are not using wireless. Users are
using LAN connection in a domain. If you are suggesting hardware, then how
come only Access databases are affected and not Words or Excels in the shared
drive?

A client of mine has been pestered with this "Disk or network error".
As Tony says, it usually IS a network error; Access is MUCH more
demanding of network resources than Word or Excel or most other
programs. But in my client's case, it appeared to be a bogus error,
the result of either database corruption, or a client computer using a
different service pack level than the "backend" computer.

Make sure that all users are up to date with the same service packs;
compact and repair all databases; and monitor to see if the error
occurs particularly for one or two users. If it does, doublecheck
their network connections (and maybe swap their ethernet cards with
another machine that doesn't use Access).

Access is continuously pumping a small amount of data up and down the
wire with a 2.5 kpbs burst every 25 or 30 seconds. You can see this
by running Task Mgr and watching the network connection traffic.
More traffic is generated every time you read or write data.

Word and Excel only read and write data in bursts as you open and save
files. So their behaviour is much different.

Now as John states it could be different Jet Service Packs and such
too although that hasn't been what I've observed in the newsgroups.
