OL2003 Crashes and Restarts - Crashes and Restarts

C

clintonG

A recent problem... any attempt to click on an interface item to read a mail
message for example will crash OL2003 which will restart without problem. A
dialog pops up to notify Microsoft and it includes a 'restart' checkbox
which I've left selected and OL2003 does restart but I'm getting worried
about my data.

This is more than annoying especially that I see I have to uninstall Office
completely to uninstall OL2003 just to try to reinstall OL2003. Is this my
only option or might this be an issue that has some other way to be
resolved? I've also allowed Windows Update to install Office SP2 which may
be the problem...

Un installing rarely fixes anything, deselect and repair is better.
as to the cause of your Problem can you identify a message format the
causes this behavior? If Outlook doesn't initiate a repair of the PST when
it restarts, run Scanpst

Hello Diane,

I assume by 'message format' you mean text or HTML in which case OL is
configured to use whatever comes to the inbox. A day or so ago OL said it
needed repair so I simply exited and restarted thinking it would repair
itself. There doesn't seem to be a problem with the pst data but the user
interface.

For example in the inbox I have message collapsed. When a new message is
indicated (bold) any attempt to expand that message crashes OL. This does
not happen to read messages.

I've just noticed the 11/4 topic "Outlook 2003 shuts down" posted by Tim and
was reading through some of the command line switches that are available.

I'm using the default Outlook profile.

I'll go run Scanpst right now...

scanpst seems to have helped and it seems I was lucky as it did not whack my
contacts as it appears to have done to others.
Time will tell if OL2003 remains stable. The pst is up to 122 MB. I have to
assume that is a significant factor.

Any recommended tutorials helping lazybrains like myself to learn various
archiving solutions would be helpful... Most of this stuff does not have to
be accessible on a daily basis.

size doesn't matter when is this small. Since it seems view related, the
cleanviews switch might help. if you haven;t renamed outcmd.dat, try that as
well, (although the symptoms don;t seem to fit).
