OneNote 2007 & unfiled notes

Blake

As a new user I accidentally dragged the Unfiled Notes section into a
Notebook while trying to drag an unfiled note. If I now click on the Unfiled
Notes icon in the lower left of the page it still takes me to the Unfiled
Notes section but in that Notebook. How do you get the Unfiled Notes section
out of the Notebook and back as it was originally?

Tools ---> Options ---> Save ---> and then direct where to save the Unfiled
Notes section.

Hope that helps.

Thank you for the advice. there was more to it than that but I was able to
get it corrected from there.

Please share your "more to it than that" for the rest of us.

I'm sorry, I can't see how the thread started (scrolled from the
NG-server).
There is
something to be said for moving the "Unfiled Notes" tab to the
Notebook you are currently using, but it has the undesired side
effect of opening a new copy ot the Notebook.

And I can not understand at all what are you after :-( :-(

It seems that you might be trying to set a *notebook* as the location
for the "Unfiled Notes".
Why? And what for?
The "Unfiled Notes" file (it's just a file) by default is stored
*outside* any notebook.
It's sitting on the top level of the "OneNote notebooks" folder.
And there is need for moving it into a notebook. And there is absolutely
no use in trying to do so.

If one wants to insert pages held in "Unfiled Notes" in notebooks, oe
just moves the *pages* (not the whole file) to the target notebook
(drag+drop or "Move ..." from the right mouse context menu).
I have had as many as
6-7 copies open after collecting a series of screen grabs.

No wonder with such kind of wrong treatment.
And, like
you, I am unable to simply drat the "Unfiled Notes" section tab back
to the Unfiled Notes area at the bottom of the Notebook panel on the
left.

Close ON.
Open the the "OneNote notebooks" folder in the Explorer and check the
notebook folders on order to determine where the "unfiled notes.one"
file is sitting at present.
Move the file to the top level of the "OneNote notebooks".

Then open ON again. Go to "Tools | Options | Save" and change the entry
for the storage place of the "Unfiled Notes".

P.S. When using ON on more than just on computer one can share to the
unfiled notes folder and by this keep things in sync.

Thanks, Rainald, your procedure worked for me.
(I had to ignore what seemed to me to be somewhat rude comments, was
that your intent?)

I'm so sorry that you felt my wording to have been "somewhat rude"
{siiiigh}.
I had read your posting numerous times and when finally writing a reply
I was in some kind of a mood of despair because I hardly understood what
you might have done and what you were after :-(
Maybe this and the "direct" way Germans are known for (unfortunately
<!>) made my posting far more harsh than my words were intended.
There was absolutely no intention of any kind of offense and my wording
was not meant to be impolite in any way.
Pls accept my apologies.
OneNote takes the approach of hiding the underlying file organization
from us dumb users,

Does it really?
IMO it's clearly visible when checking the "OneNote notebooks"
directory. But maybe it's not transparent enough for a true newbie.
... so I was simply trying to follow the instructions
for new users. Those instructions say that a section can be moved
between notebooks; I saw nothing that excluded the section in Unfiled
Notes from the "normal" procedures. And while working in one
Notebook, I would just as soon have my "Unfiled" notes go into the
active Notebook.

IMO the basic construction is really *logical*:
What's "unfiled" is not hanging in a "file" - just as pares in a desktop
which have not yet been sorted and put into the proper folder.
Unsorted stuff stays outside the notebooks and the "Unfiled Notes"
section is used as a place of *temporary* storage for not yet sorted
things which may later find there destination in any of the open
notebooks or be sorted out to the garbage. It's just a "common" basket.
But I can live with the normal process, now that I
have seen (but don't much like) the downside.

I'm sure that after while you will appreciate the well thought out
concept which provides the needed flexibility.

All the best
Rainald

Can someone dumb this down for me? I too have somehow have created an
"unfiled" section in a notebook that I can not fix. I am a bit stupid, so
please give simple steps.

1. Standard configuration (picture):

2. Standard configuration in ON:

Tool, Options, Save:

1st path of "Paths" should point to the "right" place i.e. must be
consistent to the real place of Unfiled Notes.
