Publisher 2003 websites problem when uploaded using Frontpage 2003

I work for a special school in the uk, we have a school website created and
maintained using frontpage 2003.

We have the children produce simple webpages using publisher 2003, these are
then saved as an htm webpage, producing an .htm file and a folder containing
images.

When I try to upload these pages to our website using Frontpage we get the
text but all the images are missing - Front page can not see the folders and
does not FTP them, only the .htm files. Can any one help?

Are you dragging and dropping both the .htm and the supporting folder
into FrontPage?

I am no authority, but would it not make sense to use a stand-alone FTP
applications to accomplish the file transfer, rather than FrontPage? The
graphic interface would show exactly which files were being uploaded.

Just a thought,

Yes, both the htm file and folder are dragged into the folder to be uploaded
to the webspace. I do this by copying and pasting directly into directories.

When I drag and drop the files into FrontPage itself I get an error message
saying
'Directories containing website configuration information will not be
imported' the _vti_cnf folder is not copied over.

The pictures folder is put into the correct directory and contains the image
files but FrontPage does not see them! When the .htm file is uploaded to the
webspace no images are uploaded.

At home I use Dreamweaver MX and this has no problem uploading the publisher
files - they display correctly.

However the School only has FrontPage and they want to be able to use this -
it is an un-necessary extra expense to get hold of a different FTP program
and train the staff in how to use it - they were told that FrontPage would do
all they want to do.

All we need to do is upload the childrens websites - created in Publisher,
and link to them from a Webpage created in FrontPage. There appears to be an
issue with how FrontPage is importing and uploading the publisher websites.

Please help, it is very frustrating. (I hope I have explained the problem
clearly enough!)

There are freeware clients, such as SmartFTP, which will not cost your school
any extra money.

I know, but the expense is in the training, and the time spent having to
learn which program to do what in. This should be possible in Front Page, why
won't it do it, they are all microsoft products?

Publisher 2003 produces an index.htm file and a index_files folder
containing the supporting graphics and any additional pages. Both need to be
uploaded, and probably to a subfolder on your site. You should not try to
import the Publisher html into FrontPage...the html code is too different.
You can use either FTP uploading protocol or HTTP uploading if your site has
FPSE installed and functioning. Reference the uploading articles here:

In the future, you might post any Publisher web questions in
microsoft.public.publisher.webdesign forum.

Thanks for your reply, but maybe I am not explaining what I am trying to do
clearly.

The children create webpages in publisher 2003, these are all put into a
folder (the htm files and the folders). I then use Frontpage to edit our
website with links from our site to the pages in the folders.

Frontpage creates the links no problem, but when I upload the folder with
the htm files and the image folders, only the htm files get uploaded -
FrontPage ignores the image folders. This means that when we click on the
links from our website we see the text but all the images have a little red
cross in the corner! Frontpage not only ignores the folders on upload - you
can not even see them in the folder view.

Incidentally I am not trying to edit publisher html in frontapge - if you
double click on a publisher htm file it opens up publisher to open it.

If I use dreamweaver at home, I can do this without any problem - it sees
the folders and uploads them seamlessly - Frontpage appears to have an issue
dealing with publisher htm files.

Incidentally we have also tried using mht files these work but create file
sizes that are 3 times bigger than the htm files - this means that this is
not really an option as we are limited on webspace and dpwnload speeds.

Hope someone can help

Adam,

As a workaround, why not use an FTP program to upload all the folders?

AdamS,

Good...you aren't trying to edit the Publisher html code in FrontPage.

I understand that you want to upload everything via FrontPage and avoid the
use of FTP or even uploading directly from Publisher. I also understand that
you want to keep this as simple as possible, and that apparently FrontPage
does not "see" the Publisher folder index_files when you try to upload the
Publisher html output. I don't use FP, so I cannot tell you why it does not
see the index_files folder produced by Publisher.

Perhaps this will work, especially if the Publisher webpages are single
pages. Open the Publisher file > Tools > Options > Web Tab and uncheck
everything on that dialog, especially the "Organize supporting files in a
folder". Now when you Publish to the Web and direct the html output to a
folder on your computer, all the files and supporting graphics will be
"loose" and not be contained in a index_files folder. Can FrontPage "see"
and upload all the files, including the graphic files?

You are correct to avoid the use of mht files...

Thankyou so much, this has indeed worked, frontpage saw all the images and
they have uploaded succesfully to our website.

Much appreciated,
