Publisher file size

I am using publisher 2000. When I insert a picture of
about one megabyte in size and then save the publisher
file, the saved file can be as big as 15MB. Does anyone
know why? Is there any way to reduce the saved file size?

I want to use publisher to produce a technical manual but
so far I have made a few single page flyers containing
upto 2MB of inserted pictures, but when I save the files
they have been upto 50MB in size. I am concerned that if
I try to produce a manual it will huge!!

You can "zip" the file. Not sure how to do it in
publisher but it is possible

You cannot ZIP files from within Microsoft Publisher (or any application
apart from an archiver)

Publisher cannot open files directly from ZIP files, and so
opening/modifying the files will require large temp files.

If you are producing a technical manual, you will not want to distribute it
in .pub format, regardless of filesize. Producing a print version and a PDF
version will suffice (PDF will reduce the filesize significantly, and
printed documents have no filesize)

Publisher 2003 has fixed the file size problems seen in Publisher 2000
and older.

Mary,

I would like to post a question in reference to the size and problems I am
having also, but when I try to post a new question, nothing comes up to type
on. Please advise.
