17747 Error with SP2

B

Boettcher, Scott

My LDAP server now gives me this ³17747² error when using Entourage with
Exchange...never got it before does anyone know why?
I see lots more settings in SP2, so maybe I now have to make some changes?

-17747 = -17800 + unwillingToPerfom(53).

Are you overriding the default Global Catalog (GC) port, 3268 (or 3269 for
SSL)?
Are you overriding the root? The new GAL browsing functionality uses VLV, if
it¹s available (or if it¹s an Exchange account) and VLV will definitely not
operate if you are using a root.

Hi Scott,

Can you please verify your account settings by going to Tools | Accounts |
Exchange and then going to the Advanced tab. Is the option for ³This server
requires me to log on² enabled?

If not, can you try enabling that option.

Thanks,
Rebecca

I¹m not sure what you mean by ³root²
It¹s an EXCH account on a new 2003/AD server.

Thanks for your help folks!

Sorry, mea culpa.

In Tools/Accounts/Exchange/Your Account/Advanced, under Directory settings
is all of this information. I meant ³search base² rather than root. Also,
Rebecca¹s comment about having to log in is still appropriate.

The odd thing is that it still works, but the error keeps popping up
sporadically.
I get the same reports from my counterparts, globally.
We tried bumping up the number of ³search results² but that didn¹t do it.

Thanks,
Scott

unwillingToPerform is a server error. The Active Directory server (which I¹m
assuming you¹re using with your Exchange account) has some strict
requirements on what it will do, especially with Virtual List View (VLV),
which requires some very particular indexing strategies in order to get
right.

It would be interesting to figure out what particular query is being sent
that AD is responding negatively to.

Entourage performs several queries against the LDAP server when first
connecting to determine configuration settings to use, and thereafter either
is in a browsing (VLV) mode or a non-browsing/query-only (non-VLV) mode.

Does this error happen during e-mail addressing, or when browsing the GAL?
In the latter case, is it the first time you try to browse the GAL or during
subsequent times? Or after changing your Network Location? or?

Thanks in advance,

I had the search base filled-in, but I just took out the info there, and it
appears to work and the errors appear to have gone away.
Can you maybe enlighten me on this?
I¹m the Mac Guy, and I am trying to learn more as we move to AD.

Thanks,
SB

PS I can send you screen-shots of my config, I just don¹t want to publish
them here.

VLV full-tree search queries will not work on the Global Catalog port with a
search base when using Active Directory. AD will always return that error in
that case. However, you are more than welcome to specify a search root in
the case that you¹re using a server that supports it.
