Creating custom borders

Hi
My users have mandatory profiles on a Win2003 server. Workstations are XP
(all updates). Office 2003 (all updates). I want to be able to give users the
ability to create a custom border art on a text box using a saved image. When
doing so, Publisher gives an error saying that the Publisher cannot open the
file.

I believe this to be a permissions issue. However, I am unsure as to what
they need permission to. I have added Write permissions to Users on the local
machine in the clipart folders (C:\Program Files\Microsoft Office and the
C:\Program Files\Common Files\Microsoft Shared) and the Border folder
(C:\Program Files\Microsoft Office\Office11 to no avail.

Any suggestions are appreciated.

I would download FileMon and RegMon from
http://www.sysinternals.com/. Run them as administrator (when no
user is connected), start a TS session as a normal user and try to
run the application.

FileMon and RegMon will show you all "access denied" errors that
occur, so that you can give your users the necessary permissions on
a file-to file or Registry subkey basis.

Hi, I have a client that appears to have the same issue when trying to
create custom boarders with clip art. They either receive the message:
"the appropriate graphics converter is not available" or "Publisher
cannot open the file".

The infrastructure is the same as the initial post. I've tried using
File/Regmon but have been unable to locate as specific access denied's.

I can create a boarder as an admin but the normal users have the
aforementioned issue. We do have a group policy in effect that hides
the c drive but the app loads fine.

If anyone has any further pointers or a solution it would be much
appreciated.

Thanks in advance,
Dan

I have not been able to pinpoint using FileMon either. But yes, logged on as
an administrator the file loads fine.

I had a similar issue with PowerPoint and mandatory users not being able to
load the Organization chart slide. The problem occured because Orgchart.exe
tries to create two files in the Winnt folder: MSOClip.232 and MSOPrefs.232.
If you do not have read/write permissions on these files, you cannot write to
Winnt. http://support.microsoft.com/kb/218571/en-us

I was hoping that this would be a similar fix.

will keep searching for a solution.

Not sure if anyone has made any progress on this but I appear to have
sorted this in my instance. After filtering the filemon results we
found a single access denied. The directory in question was Program
Files\Microsoft Office\OFFICE11\1033\PUBBRD. I added the problem users
groups with change perms and all appears to work correctly.

Hope this helps, FileMon - all is forgiven.

Dan, you ROCK!!
Thanks, that definitely did the trick. I just gave my users Modify
privileges on that folder and now it works perfectly!!

MS should include this resolution in their Knowledge Base!

Hi, im just curious what you should do if your on your home computer and
logged in as admin and I removed the read only from the 1033 folder and from
the pubbrd folder. I still recieve this error. Is there something else I
should have done to allow myself access to do this task?

hmmm. i've never had that problem on stand alone machines. Being stand alone
you likely don't see a Security tab when you right click on said folder. When
you removed the "Read Only" property, did you select the option to "apply
changes to this folder, subfoler and files"? you would need to.

also, you could try running a Detect and Repair on the application. This is
found on the Help menu in Office XP and 2003 (not sure about 2000)

that's about all I can suggest. Perhaps someone else will have an answer for
you.

Good luck.
