Difference between the "{" and the "[" and when do you use?

What's the difference between the " { " and the " [ "? And, when do you use
them? I'm typing a quote and I need to clarify something briefly within the
quote. So, I don't want the reader to think that my clarification is actually
part of the quote. Do I use one of the above to make that distinction?

For the example you gave, use [ and ]. That signifies this is material you
added, not part of the original quotation.

I teach history--I don't think { and } have any defined role in academic
papers, and wouldn't ever expect to see them in such. They have defined
roles in computer code, though.

By the way, this newsgroup is about using Word, not the content of word
documents. Next time you have a grammar-type question, try searching the
web. Keywords for this question: square brackets or square parenthesis, and
curly brackets or braces.
