Does anyone know how to set up a While You Were Out template in O.

K

Kathya

In Outlook 98, there was a GREAT template I used called While You Were
Out.exe that could be downloaded into OUtlook to be used as a template to
create telephone messages for your supervisor, or anyone you take phone
messages for.

For some reason, the application is still available through Microsoft on
their website but it doesn't seem to work with Outlook 2002. Can someone
help? I LOVED that template and for me to recreate it would take months!
:) Thanks to anyone who can help!

The same form works in all versions of Outlook. Provide details of what
happened when you tried to use it.

Sue...I've already downloaded the whileout.exe file and for some reason, it's
not launching at all in Outlook and even after I searched for this .oft file
using the wild card symbol (*.oft) on my hard drive, it displays all the
other templates except this one...am I doing something wrong?

Did you read the instructions? No .oft file is involved.

Hi, Sue. I d/l the file listed above and although it says it launched and
loaded correctly, the .oft file is nowhere to be found. Can you help me
locate it or launch it properly?

Also, it directs me to find the file with the following message:

"Setup was completed successfully. The While You Were Out form has been
installed in the Microsoft Office\Office folder. To view it, start Outlook,
point to Open Special Folder on the file menu, and then click Personal
Folder."

The problem with this is, from my computer, when I click File, Open, I am
prompted to select one of three options:

Selected Items...
Other User's Folder...
Outlook Data File...

but no Personal Folder...Am I doing something wrong? Even a *.oft search
for files on my hard drive didn't result in any templates resembling the
while you were out file. Can you help me? Thanks!

Hi, Sue. Yes, I followed the directions from the website but the file cannot
be located. I d/l the file listed (whileout.exe--the application) above and
although it says it launched and loaded correctly, it doesn't seem to work...

Also, it directs me to find the file with the following message:

"Setup was completed successfully. The While You Were Out form has been
installed in the Microsoft Office\Office folder. To view it, start Outlook,

No oft file is involved.

The instructions are a bit old. The command to open a .pst file is File |
Open | Outlook Data File. Look in the Microsoft Office\Office\11.0 folder.

I found the While You Were Out.PST file but when I try to open it, it gives
me a 'blank screen' in outlook...I just want to use it as a template...the
folder you listed below does not exist on my computer but I did find the file.

Where do I go from here?

Use the folders button to display your folder tree. Under While You Were
Out personal folder tree, click on the folder. Then go to Tools->Choose
Form and select Outlook Folders for the source. The addin should be there.

That's exactly what it should do. Opening a new .pst file opens to the root
of the store. Now display the Folder List and you'll see that there is a
While You Were Out folder. If you click on that folder, you'll see the Read
Me item with instructions.

Sue, I've done that, too, but it DOES NOT give instructions there that are
usable for Outlook 2002 users. It's not applicable.

S

Sue Mosher [MVP-Outlook]

I don't see anything in the instructions that are not applicable to Outlook
2002 users, except maybe that it refers to a Compose menu instead of the
FIle | New menu. You can get to the Manage Forms dialog through Tools |
Options | Other | Advanced Options | Custom Forms | Manage Forms

Possibly the easiest way for you to use the form is to follow the
instructions for copying it and copy it to your Inbox. That way it will
appear on the Actions menu of your Inbox.

Sue, that's not helping. I give up. I can get to the location you're
directing me to, but there's no file to choose from when I get to that
folder. The .pst file comes up empty. Thanks for trying. I'm putting this
to rest because nothing you've shared with me is helpful.

Thanks again.

Kathya

Give it one more try, OK? You can see the instructions in the While You Were
Out folder, right? Now, while you're still looking at that folder, choose
Actions | While You Were Out. There's a new message using the form. At that
point, you can save it as an .oft file, put it in design mode, publish it
somewhere else, whatever you want to do with it.
