Error Retrieving yahoo mail -- Error: -16999

Version: 2008
Operating System: Mac OS X 10.5 (Leopard)
Processor: intel
Email Client: pop

I just got the microsoft office for mac 2008. I am very aware how to set up my pop settings to receive mail. The mail program with iLife 08 has no difficulty getting my yahoo mail. I have paid for the pop access with yahoo, so I know that's not the issue. It was downloading the messages fine at first but now i can't get anything. My error message reads: "problem retrieving message" "Could not retrieve mail." Error: 16999. I went to the error message log and did what they suggest, to no avail.

PLEASE HELP!!! I choose Office over iWork 08 and now am kicking myself bc microsoft can't make anything that doesn't take 3 hours to figure out.

Thanks!

I just got the microsoft office for mac 2008. I am very aware how to set up my
pop settings to receive mail. The mail program with iLife 08 has no difficulty
getting my yahoo mail. I have paid for the pop access with yahoo, so I know

See these pages for help setting up your Yahoo account:

It was downloading the messages fine at first but now i
can't get anything. My error message reads: "problem retrieving message"
"Could not retrieve mail." Error: 16999. I went to the error message log and
did what they suggest, to no avail.

PLEASE HELP!!! I choose Office over iWork 08 and now am kicking myself bc
microsoft can't make anything that doesn't take 3 hours to figure out.

Is this error -16999 or 16999?

Error -16999

Solution: Try using account with secure password selected and not selected.

In the Account window, select "Click here for advanced receiving options
button". Toggle "Always use secure password" Try to receive mail again.

For Error 16999

FWIW, iLife applications as well as iWork do not do mail. Apple Mail is
probably what you are talking about.

thanks for replying Diane. I saw earlier posts regarding this problem where you gave advice as well.

After 1 1/2 hours on the phone with microsoft support last night, toggling every possible combination for pop settings (secure log in, port 110 vs. 995, etc.) they had no solution for me. I remembered that I couldn't receive messages one time from my windows XP outlook 2004 office computer and the issue turned out to be a corrupted email stored on the yahoo server. I suggested deleting all my emails on the server to microsoft and he said go ahead. That solved the problem, believe it or not!

He said this is something he had never seen before...so Murphy's Law continues to apply whenever I deal with computers!

Thanks for the response.

Thanks for the feedback. I'll add this to the Error page and Accounts page.
I'm sure some other users will appreciate the time you took to report this
fix.
