Freeze column or row

J

Jrufin

Hi,
Does anybody know how to freeze a column? Say for example the column "Task
Name" in project, so that if I move the slider to the right, "Task Name"
column is still shown? This is very simple in Excel but in Project I don't
know how to do it. Please help!

BTW, same question goes for freezing a row so that if I move the slider down
the top half is frozen.

Thanks.

Jrufin,
Sorry, the freeze columns/rows feature is not available in Project. I
wish it was.

Hi John,
Thanks for the reply, it's quite frustrating because that function is very
basic in viewing and editing and Microsoft forgot to add it! Can someone
feedback this to them?? It will make life easier to many perhaps.

Anyway, is there any other possible way to do it in the current setup of
Project ? Normally my project file has multiple columns and when I go to the
rightmost side, I cannot see anymore what Task Name is it.

Thanks,
Joel

Hi,

I've seen many people insert Task name several times such that they always
have it visible.

Hi Jrufin,

Welcome to this Microsoft Project newsgroup :)

Assuming you're using the Gantt Chart view with the Entry table, click on
View/Table: Entry/More Tables... You should see the Entry table
highlighted, so click Copy..., give it a new name and in the dialog, click
on the Name row to highlight it and Copy Row. Then Click on the ID row and
then Paste. That should put the Name column first. Ensure the Lock First
Column is checked and OK your way out. You should now see the Gantt chart
with the leftmost column being the Task Name which will be locked. You will
probably need to go back to Edit... the columns you want. As for rows, the
Column headings are locked by default and there is no way to change that.

FAQs, companion products and other useful Project information can be seen at
this web address: http://project.mvps.org/faqs.htm

Hope this helps - please let us know how you get on :)

Joel,
Here's a trick I've used on occasion. It's not as good as freeze but
it's a good substitute.
1. First set up the view you want
2. Go to Window/New Window
3. The project displayed will be your existing file and the existing
view. Hit "ok" to create a duplicate window of that same view. Note: you
could actually pick a different view for the second window.
4. Go to Window/Arrange All

You will now have an over under of the exact same view. You can scroll
one horizontally or vertically independent of the other.

Just be aware that you are looking at two different pictures of the same
file. You can close one pane or the other but it you close the file
itself, they both go away.

Thanks for the reply, it worked somehow but did not show anymore the "outline
number" that is originally shown on the Task name column before. How come?

Because you've chosen the Name field to be the locked field - you can have
only one field locked. The ID number should still be showing unless you
deleted it, but it will scroll with the others.
