Mail Merge Tool Bar/Mail Merge Helper missing

We got the ms.blast.exe virus and removed it with anti-
virus software. Ever since the virus, the Mail Merge Tool
Bar and Mail Merge Helper in Tools cannot be found. We
tried to customize a Mail Merge Tool Bar, as well as
follow instructions in Help and MS website and were
unsuccessful

Hi Gena,

I'm not familiar with any of those instructions, so it's
impossible to know what you've already tried...

Did you try resetting the menu bar in
Tools/Customize/Toolbars?

Did you try renaming the Normal.dot template to
NormalOLD.dot then starting up word?

Last evening I discovered that Mail Merge Option under Tools is gone. I have tried reinstalling Office 2000 but nothing changes. Any one who can help?

Hi =?Utf-8?B?UHJvZmVzc29yQUVF?=,

Is (or was) Word on your machine part of the Works suite?

Cindy, Yes, I did try resetting the menu bar in Tools/Customize/Toolbars.
Yes, Word is on my machine as part of the Works suite that came with the
computer. I do not know how to answer your other question:

"Did you try renaming the Normal.dot template to NormalOLD.dot then
starting up word?"

I didn't set up the Word form letter as a template. Should I do this and how
to get started making a template? Also, should I uninstall and reinstall
Word?

Hi =?Utf-8?B?R2VuYQ==?=,
Yes, Word is on my machine as part of the Works suite that came with the
computer. I do not know how to answer your other question:
OK, if Word was part of Works Suite, then that would explain why you're having
problems. Word as part of Works is different, and the mail merge is taken care
of by a special Addin. See, for example, this Knowledge Base article

WD2000: Works 2000 Adds Functionality to Word 2000 [Q241758]
http://support.microsoft.com?kbid=241758

If you want to use Word as part of Works suite, you need to ask in a Works
newsgroup how you should start and work with Word. Otherwise, you need to
first follow the steps near the end of the above article to remove the Works
Suite Addin.
"Did you try renaming the Normal.dot template to NormalOLD.dot then

Normal.dot is the default template that's loaded automatically when Word
starts. It contains the basic toolbar, menu and keyboard settings. When you
rename the Normal.dot on your computer to NormalOLD.dot Word will generate an
installation default copy, and this usually brings back any missing menu
commands.

You posted a question about *Works* to a mishmash of Word and Windows
newsgroups, and you have the effrontery to tell the person who tried to
assist you (who, by the way, is a consummate "Word expert") that she should
become more knowledgeable about *Works* in order to help future users? If
microsoft.public.works.win is such a superior NG, why didn't you post your
*Works* problem there?

The advice that Cindy gave you was spot on: if you are starting a merge from
Works, you need to ask in a Works NG. This is very different from completing
a merge from within Word. And if you aren't planning to start a Word mail
merge from within Works, then you need to uninstall the add-in. Most of us
here know little about Works or Works Suite except that the Microsoft Works
Suite Add-in for Word causes untold problems in Word run freestanding, which
is the way most Works Suite owners use it (having bought Works Suite because
that is the cheapest way to get Word).

I really prefer to try to help people who ask off-topic

makes me more inclined to not waste my time... Thank

I am familiar with the work of Suzanne Barnhill and Cindy Meister, from the
Word newsgroups. I have used posts from both to aid myself greatly. I have
serious difficulties understanding computereze, but Suzanne and Cindy are
among those I can understand, and I have used their help, along with that of
other MVPs, often and in detail.

Suzanne, thank you for taking the trouble to set things straight.
