Margins set outside printable area

I recently upgraded to WinXP and when I try to print a custom size doc (5.5 x 8.5) I get the message: "The margins of section 1 are set outside the printable area of page. Continue Yes/No?" The margins are .5" on top and 1" all other sides, so should not be a problem. I can't figure out why I am having this problem. If I select "Yes" continue, text will print, but it prints so far right of paper that it is off the page. If I use 8.5" x 11" paper, same doc would print centered on that size paper. Also, when I Print Preview, everything looks fine. Help????????????????

If the error occurs when you print the first item to rule out is a
corrupt printer driver. Obtain an updated driver from the
manufacturer's web site and see if that resolves it

I have the same problem as grape70 but I have the most current driver shown by my manufacturer, Lexmark. Any other sugesstions?

Hi Joyce,

What is the printable area? Go to File/Page Setup and set all margins
to 0". Then when prompted select "Fix" to determine your printer
settings.

That didn't work either. In fact the "fix" set one margin at -1 which was no margin at all.

Hi Joyce,

Perhaps I should have explained what "Fix" actually does. :)

It sets the margins to the printable area is for the printer - it
doesn't change the printable area. If you select the "Fix" command and
the margins are reasonable, such as .07" bottom, .5 top, etc. then the
problem lies in the printer you are using - not Word.

If one of the margins were set for -1" then that means your printer
will print beyond the margin - which is actually a good thing - . it
supports borderless printing.

What are the margins for the printable area and what are the margins
you are trying to use?

Hi Joyce,

It's been brought to my attention that a negative margin doesn't
necessarily apply to borderless printing. (Thanks Suzanne!)

I confess I was making an educated guess - perhaps it wasn't
'educated' enough. :)

Most Lexmark printer do support borderless printing but more than
likely the negative margin means there is a problem with your printer
driver. You might see if Windows has a compatible driver and see if
that rectifies the problem. Occasionally Windows drivers do work
better than those supplied by the manufacturer.
