Can anyone from MS please weigh in on this issue? I get the same error,
except that it occurs when I check out and edit a doc from Sharepoint.

I've been posting this problem for well over a year with no response. We're
considering moving to another document management solution because of
problems like this one.

Start Word in Safe Mode: from Start, Run type in

winword /a

and press enter. Are you now able to open, edit and save a new or existing
file OK?

Yes, from both my local drive and the Sharepoint document library site (Web
folder).

This would indicate that some third party add-in is causing the problem.
Safe Mode is where Word opens in its default install condition bypassing
normal template, any add-ins, customised macros, etc. Reinstalling or even
uninstalling and reinstalling will not resolve the problem. You need to
eliminate all the add-ins until you find the culprit. If you use the
troubleshooting guide linked below (which includes closing problems despite
its name!), it should help you find the cause.

Well, we found the culprit. Goldmine has a template add-in for Word, called
the Goldmine/Word link (GMLINK.DOT). Removing the template fixes the problem
for us.

Now I just have to get FrontRange to figure out how to fix this, since many
of my users need both applications.

Hi Phil

Glad that at least you have found the culprit. I would be surprised if
Goldmine didn't already have an updated .dot for this problem, though I
wouldn't be surprised if they want you to purchase the latest version to get
it!

I am having the problem with a Goldmine DDE called Linkdot or in newer
version Linkinstaller. If you remove the link or uninstall it you can use
word again. If you reinstall the link all works well until you attempt to
save a linked document just created. Very perplexing. If you aren't using
Goldmine it may be some other add-in using DDE or Dynamic Data Exchange to
link document files.
