For over a year I have been sending and receiving mail from an Exchange
Server that was listed in my Accounts as a POP server.

Suddenly on Thursday on this week I receive error message 17895. "Connection
to the server failed or was dropped," with the explanation "Could not
retrieve mail."

The techs at work tell me no changes have been made to the server, but I'm
no longer able to get my mail into my inbox. I can still send. This
affects both my home and office computer using Entourage.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Based on my experience there are several factors will cause this issue. We
need
some time to narrow down the problem. To confirm the situation, please try
the
following steps to narrow down the issue. I appreciate your time and effort.

Step 1: Refresh Entourage 2004 Preferences
==================================
Sometimes corrupt Entourage preferences can cause such problems. Let's
refresh the
Entourage preferences as below:

1. Quit Entourage if it is still running.

2. Go to the "[Hard drive]: Users: [User name]: Library: Preferences:
Microsoft"
folder, move the following files to Desktop.

com.microsoft.Entourage.prefs.plist
com.microsoft.Office.prefs.plist
Entourage Preferences
Microsoft Office ACL [English]
Office 11 First Run

3. Drag the com.microsoft.Entourage.plist from the folder "[Hard drive]:
Users:
[User name]: Library: Preferences" to the desktop if it exists.

4. Start Entourage and test if the problem ceases.

If it doesn't work, please try the steps below.

Step 2: Create a new identity
=================================
Please go through the following steps to create a new identity and then
test
whether the issue persists in the new identity.
1. Click Switch Identities on the Entourage menu.
2. When you are prompted to close all the connections and windows for the
current
identity, click Switch.
3. In the "Select an Identity" dialog box, click New.
4. In the Identity Name box, type a name for your identity and then click
OK.

After you create the new identity, first, please check whether the same
issue will
occur. If not, please follow the steps below to transfer your data from the
original identity:

Based on my experience, the Entourage data for each identity is stored in
the
following folder:

[Hard drive] \User\ [Current User Name]\ Documents\ Microsoft User Data\
Office
2004 Identities\ [identity name]

We can copy the database from the old identity folder to the new identity
folder to
transfer Entourage data.

For example: If you old identity is "Main Identity" and your new identity
named as
"Mike", we can copy the database from [Hard drive] \User\ [Current User
Name]\
Documents\ Microsoft User Data\ Office 2004 Identities\Main Identity to
[Hard
drive] \User\ [Current User Name]\ Documents\ Microsoft User Data\ Office
2004
Identities\ Mike

If the problem still exists, please help collect the following information:

1. Please send me a screenshot of the error message you encountered.

Use the following steps to capture a screenshot:

a) Press Command+Shift+3, and the screen picture are then saved on your
desktop
with the filename picture1, picture2, etc. Alternatively, you can press
Command+Shift+4, and the mouse cursor will become a cross and you can drag
the
mouse to include a rectangular range. The range will be saved as a picture
file on
the desktop.
b) Open the latest picture to make sure it is the one you just created and
send it
to me.

2. Apple Mail can connect the same POP mail server properly?
