Number of entries in DropDown List (ribbon)

I have created a dropdown list as one of my ribbon controls. Some hold 50 or so items. One needs to hold over 1000, but when I try to generate and display it, I get this error message that says "The number of items specified for the control exceeds it valid range (0-1000)." I never set a range either in the Custom UI commands on in the VBA code that is used to set other parameters.

Can I extend the range? Is 1000 the absolute max?
