I can't view my old onenote database now that I've updated my OneNote
software. The error message that OneNote gives me tells me there is a
converter availabe but I can't find it?

Hi,

What precisely is the message you get?

I could be wrong but the only converter I remember was for files
created in one of the betas to upgrade to a "technical preview" or
something like that. That was about a year ago, probably more.

Were the files created by a OneNote beta?

There shouldn't be a problem moving from the original OneNote release
to SP1.

Thanks for the post Andrew.

It's a clean install of OneNote with the update from the MS website. The
message I get is -

This section is from a differenent version of OneNote and cannot be opened.
Your version cannot load this file, but a converter may be available on the
Downloads on Office Online Web site.

Just to be clear. Which version of OneNote did you use to create the
file(s) that you are being told need to be converted? In other words
which version of OneNote did you use to create what you called "my old
onenote database"?

Thanks

I don't think the version I have is a beta, I got on disk from MS. The help
about shows it as version 11.5510.5606

Right, but what version created the files you're trying to open? Where did
you get the "section" that OneNote says is from an earlier version?

I am getting the same error. I downloaded the beta (pre-Beta 2) and was able
to use my sections from OneNote 2003. I worked for several weeks, then
recently did the Beta 2 Refresh and my sections still worked. However, when
i moved them to my laptop (which was using OneNote 2003), i received the
error mentioned in this posting.

I loaded the Beta (this time I could only get the Beta 2 Tech Refresh) and i
still get that error on my laptop.

Thanks in advance...

How about you describe exactly how your sections went from one version
to the other and which versions exactly? So far I understand that you
created sections in Beta 1 or Beta 1 Technical Refresh, then moved them
back to 2003, then...?

Patrick...

Thanks for your response. I actually have corrected the issue. I went to
you web page and saw the comment about needing to have the Office Beta 2
installed. I originally did not have the Office 2007 Beta on the laptop.
After installing the Office Beta and the B2TR, the OneNote files can be read.

thanks again,

I am having the same problem, but I did install the Office Beta then the
B2TR. The OneNote sections that cannot be opened were in downloaded notebook
templates from Office Online.

This original question was never answered - and I have the same problem. My
original OneNote files were created in ON2003 (with all updates.) I have now
installed a clean download of a full version of ON2007 (I never had the beta)
and get the same error mesage on the actual section page:

"This section is from a differenent version of OneNote and cannot be opened.
Your version cannot load this file, but a converter may be available on the
Downloads on Office Online Web site."

I can't find a converter...

Thanks!

That's an interesting one. Maybe one of the OneNote guys who typically hang
around here will address it. I have never done an upgrade but from what I
understand, it's supposed to convert the files automatically. It might have
something to do with whether or not SP1 was applied to OneNote 2003 before
you upgraded?

I

IDICWorld

Hmmm... I have assumed that I have applied all upgrades, as it is set to do
so automatically. It didn't occurr to me to check for an update, because I
didn't have ON03 actually installed on this desktop - it was on my Tablet.
Copies of those files were on my PC and that is what ON07 found but didn't
convert.

However, with this thought, I will check my Tablet and see if SP1 was
applied and then try and open those files with ON07 on my PC.

I would be interested in anything else the "OneNote guys" have to say! <smile>

Okay let us know what you find. But just to be clear, I was just throwing
that out there. I don't know what the cause of that issue would be, but
hopefully someone with more knowledge about OneNote 2003 will chime in. I
didn't use that version.

As far as I know, there shouldn't be a difference between 2003RTM and
2003SP1 as far as the ability of 2007 to open up and convert the files.

E

Erik Sojka (MVP)

You get this error when you try to access a 2003 *.ONE file in a Notebook
in 2007? Can you describe the steps needed to recreate it? As far as I
know, you shouldn't get that error message at all just by opening up a 2003
Section file.

Can you verify that the files are OK when accessed under 2003 and are not
corrupt? You should also check that they are not password protected.
