OneNote 2007 Beta 2 and Pages/Sub-pages

Amos Soma

I am very impressed with what I see of ON 2007 so far except for the way
pages/sub-pages are handled. I seem to remember, incorrectly perhaps, that
ON 2007 was going to support pages being displayed in an outline manner,
where I could have pages, subpages, subsubpages etc., and then display them
in a tree (outline) style. IMO, the only real weakness of ON (2003 and 2007)
is the almost primitive way pages are handled and displayed. Was I wrong
about changes in the way ON 2007 was going to handle pages?

Thanks.

I don't remember reading anything about this. Why do you feel the
page-handling of 2007 is primitive?

You're correct, and there is an outline view in ON 2007. Problem is I don't
think it goes down to as many levels as you want. eg I don't think it shows
subpages. I suggest you make a feature request on Microsoft connect

I would make a feature request, but we're not likely to see another version
of OneNote until about 2010-2011 if past history is any indicator :(

Yep, that's the timeframe for a new release of Office. You should make a
feature request though on connect.microsoft.com. Microsoft collects them
and really uses them when designing a new version.

Being a novice, it seems a bit primitive to me too.
This at least with the background of having worked with the
"Organizer" (later "Lotus Organizer") since the very early days of Win
3.0.

Main thing I miss is an intelligent way of *linking* things inside ON.

That's *exactly* what he did.
You are replying in a therad openend by Amos!

As you talk on "learning":
May I suggest that you learn to "read prior to posting" (or: "set
brains in gear prior to writing" <gbg,d&rvvf>).

Have you looked at the ON guide?
It explains how to do links within ON

Patrick,

Yes the ON guide explains how to do linking. But, like Rainald, I have
struggled with creating links in ON 2007. It almost seems like the ON team
bolted this on at the last minute. It feels very clumsy. Linking in ON
doesn't seem to be nearly as straightforward as linking in say Word.

What do you mean? With Word you have to create a bookmark first then link
to that bookmark. and the bookmark can't have spaces in it so you can't
just select the text and create a bookmark from it. You have to edit the
name of the bookmark first. Plus, since you have to be able to choose the
name of the bookmark out of a list that is sorted alphabetically in order
to create the link you need to give the bookmark a name that will sort in
a reasonable manner. Plus... if you create a bookmark and go to edit the
text around it later you have to make sure you don't accidentally delete
the bookmark or add too much text between the bookmark and the text that
is being bookmarked or they may get separated. All this before you can
even think about creating a link. As I'm sure you have noticed, I am not
one to gloss over problems in OneNote, but creating links in ON 07 is
way, way, way... easier than in Word.

For sure ;-)

I know how to do links.

I was just talking about the possibilities of working with links and
that IMO there could be a more intelligent features.

Yes, it makes sense that links can be made without undergoing the
bbomarking and selcting a bookmark form the list.
Still: Booksmarks have their advantages too.
Having worked with askSam so far (with a similiar approach of
collecting stuff from different origions together) I think to know the
benfit of bookmarks - f.e. later linking from other loactions.

Would have been nice to get the best of both worlds ;-)
But this would be a wish for the next decade ...
