Opening 97 files freezes Word 2002

Hi,

There are a few times when opening a file created in Word
97 will not open in Word 2002. It freezes up the system
nad then I have to task list to close word.

It is only a few files.. but any suggestions would be most
welcome.

Hi

Is this consistent? E.g. if a file you try to open freezes Word and you have
to restart Word, does opening the same file consistently freeze Word?

A couple of tests that you can run that may help identifying if it is the
documents that are corrupt or if it is a problem with Word. First, make sure
that your hard drive is free of abandoned temp files. With all applications
closed, search your hard drive for *.tmp, ~*.do?, and ~*.wbk, use Ctl+A to
select them all and then press Delete. Open Word from the Start, Run command
by entering...

winword /a

and press OK. This starts Word in the engineering mode. Try opening a
problem document now. If Word freezes now, you most probably have corrupt
documents. You should be able to rescue most of the text by using the
Recover Text from Any File option (in the File Open Dialog).
