outlook and vpn

After connecting to VPN, outlook office 2000 will not connect. I enter name, domain and password and get an error message invalid credentials, please reenter information. I am using xp pro operating system. Outlook works fine in 98se. Does anyone know how to get outlook to recognize the exchange server. thank you.
