Please help - Disk Error -34 "Disk Full" Error

I've got a new error when trying to access my email. An error dialog
comes up saying "Error -Could not retreive mail from the account "my
email address" and then it says "Explanation - The disk is full".
Underneath that it says "Error: -34".

I've tried compacting the databases even going to a complex
compacting.

I created a new identity and was then able to retrieve my mail, but
again, when I switched back to the previous identity I got the same
message.

Need help, please! Any ideas?

I'm operating on a Mac, OS 9.2.2. The two hard disks I've got have
either 111 Gigs and 17 gigs free space. I tried to increase the memory
allocated to Outlook Express to 58 MB and that solved the problem for
about 10 minutes. Then it came back.
