Project 2000 Runtime Error

D

Dan Spadoni

Windows 2000 SP4; Project 2000 SP1

Recently upgraded to Adobe Acrobat 7.0 (from 4.0) and MS Office 2003 (from
XP).

Any attempt to open Project or a .mpp file results in this dialog box:
Microsoft Visual C++ Runtime Library
Runtime Error!
Program: C:\Program Files\Microsoft Office\Office\WNIPROJ.EXE
This application has requested the Runtime to terminate it in an unusal way.
Please contact the application support team for more information.

Clicking "OK" terminates the program.

The Event Viewer gives the following information:
Source: WLTRYSVC; Category: None; Type: Error; Event ID: 2;
Description: SetServiceStatus() failed

I completely uninstalled then reinstalled Project 2000 SP1; same result.
With all that info can anybody please offer a suggestion on how I can fix
this?

Thanks,
Dan Spadoni

Sorry to be flippant, but either downgrade to prior versions of Office and
Acrobat, or better yet, upgrade to Project 2003.

I'm not saying that your problem is a known issue, but P2K is pretty old,
and I'm not surprised you're having trouble. You might be able to find a
solution, but the value of the time it takes you may well be more than the
cost of a Project upgrade. Besides that, P2K3 truly is a much improved
product, with many helpful features that make schedulers' lives happier every
day.

It's irritating when we find ourselves unexpectedly forced to make such
choices, but that's how it is sometimes.

If these suggestions are unacceptable, you might try posting your query to
the Project General Questions board, since this forum is focused on Project
Server. Who knows, there might be an easy solution.

Reid,

Thanks for the reply. I thought that might be the case. I'll try the
60-day free-trial download of P2K3 and see if that solves the problem.

Installing the 60-day trial version of Project 2003 did not solve the
problem. After some futzing around, it turned out the culprit was the Abobe
Acrobat 7.0 plugin for MS Office applications (PDFMOfficeAddin.dll). Once I
disabled this plugin by simply renaming it, Project 2000 starts and runs as
it should without any runtime errors. I don't know if this situation was
created by an installation problem or some other issue with Adobe's plugin.
Since this plugin is not necessary for creating PDF's from the Print command
in any Office application (including Project), I'm just going to leave
well-enough alone.
