Project 2007 and changing the printer from Print Preview

D

Duane Nutley

I am wondering if a problem in previous versions of Project has been fixed in
2007. In all versions of Project when I have viewed anything in Print Preview
(reports, Gantt chart, etc) if I wanted to change the printer to Acrobat, or
another printer on the network, it was not possible. I have always had to go
into File>Print, change the printer and then go back into Print Preview and
finally Print.

Thank you!

Duane,
I'll have to differ with you on defining it as a "problem". Selecting a
printer is one of the options under the Print submenu, in Project and
every other application I've used. So not being able to select or change
to a different hardcopy output when in Print Preview is not a "problem".

Print Preview is simply a feature that allow the user to see how the
document will look given the page settings and with a specific printer.
You do NOT have to go through Print Preview to print.

Hope this helps.

Very true that you dont have to go through Print Preview to be able to
print, but I am thinking of when you view Reports and they always open as
Print Preview. If I then want to pdf that Report, I have to ensure that the
printer is already set up beforehand as Acrobat (or whatever pdf driver the
user may have). (A common question I am asked, as some people want to be able
to save soft copies of what they are seeing without using the Export feature).

Or if I am viewing the Gantt Chart and the last time I printed something in
Project was to an A4 printer, whereas now I want it to print to a printer
that allows A3 support.

In all other Office Programs when you are in Print Preview and select the
Print icon you are able to change the printer you wish to print to. In
Project this is not possible.

We have a difference of opinion in regard to whether it is a problem or not,
but I am wondering if Project 2007 allows this functionality.

It behaves the same in Project 2007. You cannot change the printer from
Print Preview...

Duane,
OK, now I have a better understanding of what your are referring to. Jim
answered your question with regard to whether Project 2007 is any
different. However, Project 2007 does have expanded capability with
regard to creating visual reports for Excel Pivot Charts or Pivot
Diagrams for Visio.

I'm not totally sure what you mean by saving "soft copies" because
customized reports are saved with the file. What you cannot do with
Project's reports feature is to save that report to send independently
to another user (i.e. someone who doesn't have Project).

I don't know why the printer selection cannot be changed from the Print
button in Print Preview like it can in other Office applications. As far
as I know, no other user has asked about it but perhaps it can be
incorporated into a future release of Project.
