Publisher can not save file

E

Eon

I recently started having troubles with my Publisher 2003. Whenever I go to
save my files now, using save as or just the save button, it gives me a
dialog box that says "Can not save file." It does that twice, then it
disappears. I also noticed that when it does this, it leaves the .tmp files
in the directory where I tried to save. I can change the name of the files,
and sometimes it will save it. Most of the time not though. I have NAV, and I
noticed that it was said there was an issue with Publisher and NAV. Is this
the same with the 2005 version, and is this anything anyone has seen before??

Thank You.

Do you have high resolution graphics in the files? Are you editing a publication that
was originally created in a different version?

Open Norton, disable "script blocking." In Norton options, misc. clear "Enable Office
Plug-in."

Does this occur if you use the Save As button and choose a different
filename?
How full is your hard disk?
Are you saving to your local hard drive or to a removable medium?

I deleted all the graphics, turned off script blocking and disabled the
office plug in. I tried a file on another computer, and it worked fine. I
have all the current updates for Office 2003. The files were all created in
2003. It is not just one file doing this, it is all my publisher files. I can
save to a *.mht file with no problem though.

It happens when I use save as and the regular save. I am saving to a hard
drive that is no where near capacity. I still have 50 gb left. The file is
just over 1mb itself.

Does this happen with newly-created files, or only when opening existing
files?

What printer is set as the system's default printer?

How large is your Temp folder? (To find out, Start > Run > "%temp%" > OK;
Ctrl+A, Alt+Enter)

E

It does the same thing for newly created files as well. My temp folder is 894
mb, with 1207 items. Seems kind of large to me. Default printer is an HP
Photosmart 7760.

Well. I guess so. It was installed on my Dell when I first got it. It hasn't
asked anything about activating, and it saves in to other formats.

That is BIG.
Close all Windows programs, and delete as much of the folder as you can.
Ctrl+A, Delete is normally the way to go. You will need to deselect any
files that Windows can't delete when you get an error (once you get an
error, hold Ctrl and click the leftmost file on the topmost row), and try
again.

Then empty your Recycle Bin.

Have you checked your machine for spyware? Which programs have you used?

E

eOk, I deleted almost everything except for 5 or 6 files. I am using spybot,
adaware and MS antispyware. It only showed a couple tracking cookies, and
Nortons finds no viruses. However I just noticed that files keep adding up in
my temp folder like crazy. I just deleted everything a few minutes ago, and I
am already up to 284 files!! I am working on getting AVG right now and will
run it. But even when my temp folder was empty, it would not let me save my
pub files.

How many programs have you got running?
If you tap Ctrl+Alt+Delete and go to Processes, how many processes are
listed as running?

E

I am running about 55 processes right now. Only program I am running that I
normally don't is AVG, and I just started it after all this.

Hmm, this has me stumped.

Which temp files were you unable to delete?

E

Eon

3 or 4 .tmp that started with a ~ and a perflib.bat file, and a .log file. I
am trying to go through my processes and see if I have something suspicious.
AVG found nothing, and neither did any of my other programs. So far it has
created 1,024 files, and some files just increasing in size. Sounds like a
virus or something, but I have no way to find it. But would this still be
affecting my publisher?

sounds like remnants of an recent install...open the .bat file in notepad you might find a clue in there - log file too.

Here is the contents of one of the .dat, not .bat files. Sorry bout that. The
perflib.dat I can not open because it is being used by another program. The
..log file is for my printer.

That is all a bunch of garbage to me. However on a high note, I was able to
save a publisher file this morning. Not sure how long it will stay that way
though.

no real clues there except its a remnant of a website.

There are quite a few .tmp files that I can not delete because it says access
denied or in use by another program. Is this typical? And these are in my
temp folder. I am still able to save in my Publisher today, and after running
AVG again this morning, it found an I-Worm virus and deleted it. So maybe my
problem is fixed. Thank you everybody. For now..

R

Rob Giordano \(Crash Gordon®\)

Could be the worm.

Yah you cant delete a temp if it's in use. What I usually do is a search for *.tmp then sort by date and delete all of them that are not today's date.
