Put Outlook on the server

Craig Pfaff

I have a user who is using Microsoft Outlook XP for their e-mail. They're
using a POP3 account so I know that everything (e-mails, address book
etc...) is located locally on their computer. I'd like to move all that to
the server so it can be backed up, I'm not to sure what to move or how to
move it or if I can move it.

Thanks in advance, Craig

Close down the user's Outlook. The file has the extension PST. Move the
file onto the server. Then at the user's workstation launch control panel,
double click on mail, add the PST from the server (personal folders) and make
the new one the default and remove the other one.

NOTE: You cannot backup the PST on the server UNLESS the user is not using
Outlook - so remind your user to CLOSE OUTLOOK AT THE END OF THE DAY.

Note that accessing a .pst file over a network is not a supported
configuration.

You can ask the user to install this free add-in from Microsoft.

Outlook 2003 Add-in: Personal Folders Backup
http://tinyurl.com/4xwnh

Overview
NOTE: New version updated October 31, 2003. This updated version fixes
an issue with the browsing functionality on Windows 98 and Windows ME.

Backing up your Microsoft Outlook information is quicker and easier with
the Personal Folders Backup feature. Personal Folders Backup creates
backup copies of your .PST files at regular intervals, in Outlook 2000
and later versions, making it easy to keep all of your Outlook folders
safely backed up.

With Personal Folders Backup, you can choose which of your .PST files
you wish to back up, and how often you wish to back them up.

Each .PST file contains all of your Outlook folders, including the
Inbox, Calendar, and Contacts. You can have a single .PST file (usually
called "Internet Folders" or "Personal Folders" in your Folder List),
but you might also have an additional .PST file that you use for
archiving ("Archiving Folders"). Personal Folders Backup lets you back
up any or all of these .PST files.

Note Personal Folders Backup only backs up .PST files. If you have a
Microsoft Exchange Server mailbox, your server mailbox folders are
likely backed up regularly by your server administrator.

Note If you are using an East Asian operating system (such as Korean
language WinMe) with an English version of Office, you will be unable to
use this download.

Not necessarily a good idea - asking a user to back up - that is like asking
the government not to charge us taxes.

They may forget, they may back it up and leave the backup copy on their hard
drive, etc.
