received time in preview pane wrong

All of a sudden, for no apparent reason, the "received"
timestamp displayed for all my messages in the preview pane
of my inbox is displaying as 8 hours earlier. When I open a
message, it shows the correct time. My system time and time
zone are correct, and haven't been changed. If I send email
to myself, the preview pane in the "sent items" shows the
correct time. But once I receive the email, the timestamp
in the "received" column of my inbox displays 8 hours
earlier. What the heck is going on?

Tell whomever operates your mail server that their system clock is off.

This is happening to two separate account using separate
email servers. One of them is a comcast account (for both
incoming and outgoing mail). I am getting the wrong
timestamp in outlook (in the preview mode only) for both of
them.

And if I retrieve the same email message using Netscape
mail, the timestamp is correct.

At this point, I really don't know what could cause the symptom you
describe. Have you tried running Detect and Repair (under the Help)
menu? Have you tried starting Outlook in safe mode ("outlook.exe
/safe") to make sure some add-in isn't screwing over Outlook? Have you
tried creating a new mail profile? When there are problems with the
toolbars, renaming outcmd.data and restarting Outlook (to rebuild the
file) fixes the toolbars. Might work for the preview pane but it's a
stretch.

I have recreated the problem on another computer running Outlook. Email retrieved from that server displays the wrong "received time" (8 hours in the past). Email retrieved from other email servers is fine

Looks like your first reply was correct - the system clock is wrong on the mail server. I thought I was having the same problem with my other comcast comcast, but I didn't realize I was sending that email out through the other mail server. This problem is definitely isolated to that email server, and can be reproduced in more than one outlook configuration

Sorry for the confusion. I'm still trying to get my email server host to solve the problem

In Outlook go from the "Tools" pulldown menu and select "Options". The dialog box default to "Preferences" tab, select "Calendar Options button. On the next dialog box in the area for "Advanced Options", select "Time Zone..." button. At the next dialog box, make sure you have the appropriate time zone and that "Adjust for daylight saving time" is checked. Confirm that "current time", just below this setting, is correct. That should resolve the issue of wrong time on messages
