Now, now, Bruce.

This newsgroup is sponsored by Microsoft. You could do them the courtesy of
suggesting a general Bing search. <g>

I am becoming fairly adept at googling on Bing. I find it strangely
exhilerating in fact.

I have to admit that after repeated frustration at searching through Help
files, and having My Computer seraches fail to find things I know are there,
I am apt to be somewhat cynical about Microsoft's ability to craft searches.
Still, I should check out Bing. Maybe I'll change the stardard reply to
"your preferred search engine" or some such.

I realize your reply was lighthearted. I hope mine didn't come across as
overly serious (or serious at all, for that matter). It is an interesting
thing that "google" has become a noun, verb, and adjective based on a brand
name. I realize it started its life as a name (spelled "googol") for a
really big number, but the evolution of "google" is really rather
intriguing.

"Googol" is a really big number, but I am not sure that was the start of
"google" in the search engine. It could also have been "Barney Google", a
cartoon character of yesteryear.

Still, given that "google" is now accepted as a valid verb, I suppose "You
can google it with Bing." would be valid.

I went by information on Wikipedia regarding the origin of the company name,
then confirmed it on the Google web site (Company overview).

However, further investigation shows that the name "Google" was suggested as
the name for a very large number when the Barney Google comic strip was at
the height of its popularity, so perhaps there is a connection to the comic
strip too.

Well. I think that's as far into that as I will go.
