What is the word equivalent for a floating cell in wordperfect?

I am used to wordperfect. In it, I put floating cells throughout a document.
At the end of the document, I put a table with all the information in various
cells. When I hit calculate, it all transfers throughout the document and I
am done. How can this be done in word?

I just made a one-page document in Word 2003, with a small table at the
bottom of the page. I marked a cell in the table with a Bookmark (Insert,
Bookmark, type a name without using spaces) and then clikced Close. I
re-positioned the cursor at the top of the page and created a reference to
the bookmark (Insert, Reference, Cross-Reference, select Bookmarks from the
Reference type list and Bookmark text from the Insert reference to list,
select the named bookmark from the list below and click Insert and Close.
It's then possible to change the entry in the referenced cell in the table,
and then update by selecting all the document (Ctrl+A) and pressing F9.

Please try this for yourself in a blank document. Does this achieve what you
need?
