why does query ask for input criteria twice

I have a query with a criteria that contains

    like "*" & [Enter Venue] & "*"

When the query is run, the prompt to 'enter venue' is repeated after the
information has been entered - how can I stop this?

The most common reason this happens is because there's a spelling mistake
somewhere, and Access is actually asking two separate questions/prompts.

What happens if you re-create the query from scratch and use the criterion
    you described?

In addition to Jeff's sage advice...

You might double-check whether you have
applied some sorting while viewing the results
    previously, then saved the query.

When you view the results of your query,
go to top menu and in "Records" dropdown,
    click on "Remove Filter/Sort"

The query was prompting you first when
executing the query, then a second time
when it tried to apply this "external" sort.

?!"sage" -- doesn't that imply grey and grizzled?

    I defer to Duane.

Actually, if that's what it means,
I'm probably "sager" than either of you...
(had first grey hair in junior high school)

I had to leave Colorado for fear of
being taken for a grizzly and shot.

Well, that last part is not true....
I look more like a silverback gorilla
    than a grizzly...

It seems like just yesterday those long
difficult sessions as Diane Fossey taught
    me how to sign...

then the big, beaming smile on her
face when I signed asking if she could
    teach me MS Access...
