word 2000 default "horizontal line" is a box?

when i use the borders toolbar to insert a horizontal line, i am
instead getting a box. how do i set the borders tool button to insert
the original line rather than the box? i am coming up empty googling
and the like.

i started winword using "Start -> Run -> "winword.exe /a" and this
fixed the problem. it would stll be nice to know if this was a
registry problem or not.
