word 2007 prof. wil not delete whI backspace of use delete key

Can anyone explain wht i must have done to no longer be able to use
"dele"function. I am using word 2007 professional

Possibly the same setting as in all recent versions of Word: Typing Replaces
Selected Text. Found in Word Options, Advanced tab, the very first option.
