Visio internal error: #2103

I am using Visio 2002 to create vector signatures for digitally signing
PDF files. In general I have successfully created small vector files
with transparent backgrounds by scanning signatures and vectorizing
using a raster to vector program. I import the vector image into visio,
ungroup it, create an object from each closed path (using
Shape>Operations>Join) and subtract the various loops from the outer
outline so that the "holes" in the signature are transparent. In this
way the signature looks natural when it is placed in documents, possibly
over lines or other objects.

This usual works fine (I haven't listed all the steps), but sometimes I
get the following error message when subtracting the "holes":

Visio internal error: #2103
Action 1454: Subtract

I am pretty sure that each of my objects is a legitimate shape since I
can apply a fill, so I really have no clue as to what is going on. Any
insight into this problem would be helpful.

I plan to get my hands on a copy of Visio XP to see if that makes a
difference. If it does I'll post the result.
