WORD 2002 - slow slow slow

Greetings: I have a problem with MS WORD 2002 which is installed with Office
XP. Windows opens slowly, closes slowly, abends frequently . I cannot find
my Winword.exe or Normal.dot files when I do a search on "My Computer". I
have reinstalled MS Word once and Office XP once and no good. I have made
the registry change recommended by Microsoft in
http://word.mvps.org/FAQs/AppErrors/ProbsOpeningWord.htm (in previous posts
to this newsgroup) to rename or delete key
\HKEY_CURRENT.....\Office\10.0\Word\Data and the key automatically is
recreated again. When I access WORD with Run winword.exe /a WORD is fine. I
did notice that in the key \HKEY_CURRENT.....\Office\ there is also a key
for \HKEY_CURRENT.....\Office\8\Word\Data. Being not too savvy especially
with the Registry I did not want to delete that entry. I have WIndows XP. I
have removed a plug-in from Nortons AntiVirus as was recommended. Appreciate
the opportunity to possibly get assistance (as in the past). Thanks as usual
and looking forward to a "fix" John L.

Open Windows Explorer and under Tools, Folder Options, View tab, make sure
that the options are set to View All files including System and Hidden files
and that the Hide File Extension option is deselected. Then try following
the FAQ again.

Many thanks for your reply. I have WIndows XP and
to be able to search and view all occasions of "normal.dot" I had to change
the "search"
parameters to include all system and hidden files & folders and was then
able to find normal.dot. There were 2 instances of "normal.dot" that I could
not rename of about 4 or 5. These files are normal.dot in C:\Documents and
Settings\Xxxxxxx\Recent and in My Computer that I could delete these 2 files
but did not rename. Is this strange or ....?

I won't say it is strange because it has happened to other users. I don't
know why more than one normal.dot should be created, but it does seem to
happen. You should now be able to eliminate your problem.

Embarrassing but I am at a loss as to what is going on. I deleted all the
normal.dot files that I could and started over. Still no good after the
first attempt. I deleted the data key and still no good. Even after I delete
the key it is created the next time I open WORD. Unfortunately I am missing
something here. Any suggestion or could someone steer me toward a
document(s) or articles on the MS support site for MS WORD 2002. All
suggestions appreciated. I am a frequent user of MS WORD at home and this
problem is a "pain".Thanks again - John.

It is normal for Word to create a fresh new Data key and a new Normal.dot
when the old ones are deleted or renamed. If you are still experiencing
problems with a fresh Normal.dot and Data key, the only possibility left is
a rogue add-in (in Word's Startup folder or the Office Startup folder).
