1 resource working on 2 tasks concurrently

I see related topics and dialog on this forum, but none that specifically
help with this issue:

Resource A has 2 tasks and works on Task A part-time (let's say a support
function). So, I allocated this resource to 25% to Task A. The other task
has this resource allocated full-time. I expected MSP to "fill-in" the 75%
gap from Task A and have this resource start Task B at the same time as Task
A. But, the resource is actually under-allocated until Task A is complete,
then the resource starts on Task B. The only way I get around this manually
changing the allocation of the concurrent tasks to total 100% (Task A=25%,
Task B=75%). This is very tedious (I have a huge MSP file) and if priorities
change, some of the 'fill-in" tasks may change that need the partial
percentages. Is there an option that enable MSP to fill in the gap
(100%-25%)automatically?

Hi ecipm,

Welcome to this Microsoft Project newsgroup :)

No. Project has no intelligence and no optimization facilities: you have to
tell it what to do. Once you have fed in the data, Project's job is to
produce a schedule to meet those requirements. There's no "what if?"
facility, neither can it juggle resource levels. Even levelling just
follows a set of yes/no rules and only delays tasks until the resources are
available. It is the PM's task to decide whether this schedule is acceptable
and re-jig the resources and priorities to meet your customer's demands.

FAQs, companion products and other useful Project information can be seen at
this web address: http://project.mvps.org/faqs.htm

Hope this helps - please let us know how you get on :)
