access 2000 Compacting error

Hi

I have recently (last few weeks) received an error when some databases try
to auto compact:

"Cannot open database 'C:\Path\db1.mdb'. It may not be a database that your
application recognizes, or the file maybe corrupt."

I have compact & Repaired them and this has had no effect. All were created
in access 2000.

any thoughts on this one would be helpful....

It may BE corrupt, and it may be a corruption that Compact and Repair cannot
handle.
