Access freezes when opening another mdb

I have Access 2002 SP3 installed on a Windows Me machine. If I have one
database open and attempt to open some other database (I would typically do
this from Windows Explorer or via a desktop shortcut) the system focus
returns to the original instance of Access and it seems the new database is
trying to open in this program rather than opening a new copy of Access for
the new database. Access then freezes and I have to cancel the system task.

I can sometimes run multiple databases if opened shortly after the machine
has booted, but after a few hours of operation it seems somethting goes awry
that prevents multiple instances of Access running..

I have Access 97 installed as well and it continues to have no issues with
running multiple instances.

Is this a Windows issue or an Access 2002 install / config issue? Any
thoughts or suggestions appreciated. TIA

Hi Frank,

I also have Access 2002 SP3 running on several PC's, at home and at work,
that use Windows 2000 as the operating system. I also have one installation
of 2002/SP3 on my laptop, which has Windows XP Professional. For what it's
worth, I do not have the same problems you described. If your present
hardware is compatible with Windows XP Professional, then you should
seriously consider the upgrade. You'll have a much more stable and secure
computing environment.

Hi Tom - and thanks for the reply. Yes, I suppose an upgrade is in my
future. Last time I tried soemthing like this was taking a Win 95 machine to
NT 4.0 so that my home machine would be compatible with my work environment
- NT really overmatched the hardware and it didn't perform well. I think my
current machine could hack it tho .... thanks.

Hi Frank,

I recommend contacting the vendor who sold you your PC, to see if it can be
upgraded to WindowsXP Professional. I believe you can find a Hardware
compatibility list (HCL), somewhere on Microsoft's web site, in case you
built your present PC from scratch.

If your PC is old enough that it cannot be upgraded, then it's probably time
to think about purchasing a new PC, if that's within your budget.

Good Luck,
Tom
