Archive and Multiple Workstations

What is the recommended method for archiving when accessing the Exchange
Server with Outlook from multiple locations?

I'm running Outlook 2003 on both machines, which access an Exchange 2003
server via the Internet.

Each user has only limited space on the Exchange Server, so we need to
archive regularly. I will need continued access to the archived data on both
computers (laptop and desktop). Do I need to copy the archive to the second
computer after I archive? Will that even work, or will it confuse the other
system? Is there any easier way so that it's automatic on both systems, or
does archiving on one, clear out the Exchange Server data so the second
system can't archive? Will I be able to keep adding to the archive as I need
to move data off the Exchange Server (about once a month)?

Thanks for any advice,
Colin

That scenario is one that calls for server-based, not client-based
archiving. There are a multitude of Exchange archive server solutuions.

That's one way.

It won't confuse the other system if you don't overwrite one PST with the
other.

I haven't tried it, but if you were to archive to a network share (a
separate PST for each machine), then you should be able to access both from
each machine. A caution, though: it's not supported and you can't have a
PST opened on more than one machine at any time.

Unfortunately, that's not an option. The server is a third party, which is
why we are only allocated limited space.

Considering I have no choice but to archive on my machine, how can I keep
access to all messages on both my machines?

Thanks,
Colin

When you say not to overwrite one PST with the other, I don't understand.
How can I copy the archive file from one computer to another, without
overwriting any archive file on the destination (like the one that would
exist from the previous month's copy)?

The Exchange Server is not on the same subnet as either of the computers I
use. It's a remote system accessed via the Internet. Is a network share
still relevant?

Thanks,
Colin

Easy. Put it in another folder or give it a different name. Copying over
the top of an existing PST that Outlook references in a profile is a
guaranteed way to corrupt your profile.

Of course, if it's not currently in the profile, there's no trouble. If you
want to replace an existing PST, then close the PST in Outlook and close
Outlook. You won't have any trouble them.

Sure.
