Automatically splitting tasks with remaining work

I’m relatively new to Project but have a basic understanding. Here’s the issue:

1. I have tasks for an individual (Carl) scheduled over the next few weeks
2. I’ve recorded progress (% completed) on many of the tasks as he’s jumped
around a bit from one to another.
3. I’m trying to tighten up the remaining schedule by using Tools | Tracking
| Update Project | Reschedule uncompleted work; as I’ve read that this will
split partially completed tasks and “scrunch†the remaining uncompleted
portions together. When I do this, Project doesn’t split the tasks as
expected and next week’s schedule shows Carl fully booked working on a 5-day
task that only has 1 day of actual work left to do.
4. Note: I have also run automatic leveling and have the “allow for split
tasks†checked.

Any ideas?

In the Tools - Options dialog, Schedule tab, do you have "Split in-progress
tasks" checked? If not, try that and see if you get the results you expected.
