Can I create a single index from multiple files?

The manuscript for which I am creating an index contains thirteen chapters,
and each is in a separate file. Is there a way to create a single index in
which the entries from all thirteen chapters are collated?

Suzanne, Your suggestions have been very helpful. However, I haven't been
able to figure out how to get Word to mark entries across multiple docs.

For example, I have 8 chapters in my book, each one is a separate doc. I use
the RD field codes to create the TOC and that works beautifully. I use the
same system for the Index, but I have to mark all of my list of words to
index in all 8 documents. Is there a way around this?

Even better, is there a way to get word to mark everything for you and then
just delete what you don't want?

Thanks!!

I believe a later posting of this question has been dealt with (by Stefan
Blom IIRC), so I'll just reiterate his recommendation that you'll find the
entire process much simpler if you combine the documents into a single one.
Word can easily handle eight chapters (and much more) in a single doc.

Suzanne,

Thanks! I'll combine the docs for the index.

One question remains: Is there a way to get Word to automatically mark
references for the index, or do I have to manually select every word and then
mark it as an index ref?

I really appreciate your help!!

Again, I believe this was answered in your other thread: you can create a
"concordance" (you should find instructions for that in Word's Help), or you
can use AutoMark after inserting the XE field for a single instance of a
term, but the best indexes are constructed intelligently, by hand, as
described at http://word.mvps.org/faqs/formatting/Createindex.htm
