Cannot start Import/Export engine

Office 2003

From Outlook, when I click File|Import/Export...I get a message that says
"Microsoft Office cannot start the Import/Export engine" and then gives
instructions on how to fix it via install...Add or Remove features....and
change the feature to...Run from My Computer or Run from CD/Network. When I
follow these instructions, everything seems to "reinstall" but I get the same
error message. My question is...if I uninstall Office 2003 and reinstall
would I lose my Contacts, Calendar, etc. upon completion of the reinstall.

Any insights to this problem would be greatly appreciated.

State more accurately the instructions you followed and exactly what
happened. State the error message more accurately.

Russ, what I see is this....when I select Import/Export from the File drop
down list..

Microsoft Outlook cannot start the Import/Export Engine. This feature is not
avialable. To make this feature available, please run Setup again, select
"Add ro Remove Features" and change the feature to "Run from My Computer" or
"Run from CD/network".

Then I
- Run Setup
-Choose "Add ro Remove Features"
-Select Outlook on the custom setup window
-Select "Choose advanced customisation of applications"
-From the "Advanced Customization" window I expand "Microsoft Office Outlook"
-From the very next "Advanced Customisation" window I click "Importers and
Exporters"
-From the drop down list I click "Run from My Computer"
-Then I click "Update"

The installation continues and appears to complete succesfully. After all
this, I still get the same "Microsoft Outlook cannot start........engine.

Go on. Did you insert it? Have you tried installing from the CD?

Well, I resolved it. I ran Setup from the installation CD, and selected
uninstall Office 2003, which left Office 2003 intact, then I used Add/Remove
to remove Office 2003. That removed Office 2003. Then using the installation
CD, I installed Office 2003 (Word, Excel, Outlook). Upon completion, my
personal folders in Outlook were intact and the Import/Export feature was
working.

Rather a lot to go through when you could have just installed the feature
you needed from the CD.
