Can't Backup Normal Template

L

landmark

I'm using MS Word 2007 on Vista, and my normal.dotm template file wa
recently compromised, so Word generated a fresh one. I lost my macro
and many customizations.

As I redo all my customizations, I want to backup the normal.dotm file
but when I go to the folder that it's in (C:\Documents an
Settings\[user]\Application Data\Microsoft\Templates), the "dat
modified" date doesn't get updated. The date and time stamp represen
when the new template file was generated, but it never changes.

I could save this file elsewhere but I don't think my new customization
will be included. Nevertheless, when I open a new Word doc, th
customizations and macros are all present. So where is my most recen
normal.dotm file, if it's not in the Templates folder? How can I back i
up

It seems as if your user templates folder isn't where you think it is. To find
the correct path to the folder, look in the File Locations dialog box (click the
File Locations button at Office button | Word Options | Advanced).

Wouldn't Word have renamed the old one when it made a new one, so that
landmark can get all the customizations out of it somehow?

S

I'm not sure. Actually, I'm having difficulties envisioning a scenario where
Word would create a new Normal template unless the old one was missing. Well,
there is one situation: when you install Word 2007 or 2010 and there is a
Normal.dot present, that template will be renamed (and its settings copied into
Normal.dotm).

That didn't happen when I beta-downloaded 2010: all my macros and
shortcuts (I have hundreds, quite mnemonic, for phonetic characters)
disappeared, so I shut it down and rooted around to find my own
normal.dotm.

Maybe my memory fails me when it comes to macros. However, I'm certain that font
settings were changed to match my defaults in Word 2003 (which were Times New
Roman 12 points for body text and and Arial for headings).

Are you saying that you got a fresh Normal.dotm with the settings of Word 2010
(meaning that the default font was set to Calibri, 11 points and that headings
were in Cambria)?

IIRC, I simply opened an existing document to keep working on it, and
I couldn't type accents or transpose characters. I didn't need to know
any more than that, and I didn't see that there were any but cosmetic
changes to the GUI. So I Uninstalled it ASAP.

It seems as if you didn't look that closely into what happened with the Normal
template, then.

Or maybe it's just that beta software does things differently than full
versions...

I just got an ad for something new -- Office365 I think they called it
-- but it seemed to suggest it's some sort of mobile app?

OP here.

Yes, Word generated a new template with the default fonts of Calibri an
Cambria (headings).

The question is, Where is my template? How can I find the active dot
file?

I look into where the options where it says the file would be, but tha
file always has the old timestamp on it. The customizations and change
are being saved somewhere else, but I can't figure out where. It is no
in the folder designated by Word options it seems

S

Search Windows for all files called Normal.dotm (be sure to search hidden files
and folders). The file must be somewhere. If you're not already displaying
filename extensions in Windows, choose to do so (it's in Folder Options).

By the way, which kind of customizations are we talking about here? Note that
not everything is saved in Normal.dotm. Macros, for example, could be in a
custom template or in an add-in.
