Change data source during a merge

Is there a way to code a merge document so that a portion of it uses a
different data source than the rest of the document?

No. Mail Merge in Word can use only a single flat data source. You would
have to create a "roll-your-own" equivalent to mail merge that did not make
use of the mail merge facility.
