close outlook data file

I recently had to replace my hard disk and so made a copy of my outlook.pst
file which I saved to my work server. I have rebuilt my new disk and have
copied back the file without problems.
The backup file still shows as a folder in my Folder List and I cannot close
it. The error message reads "The operation failed. An object could not be
found."
I have tried renaming the backup file but I still can't delete it.
This is annoying as the backup folder is named the same as my current folder
and is therefore confusing.

You need to create a new mail profile via the mail applet in the control
panel.

are you saying that I need to create a new profile and then delete the
current one?
what, if any, data will I lose by doing this and is there any way to back
this up

yes, you need to create a new mail profile via the mail applet and delete
the old one. the reason why is you have minor registry key corruption.

you shouldn't lose any data. the only thing you will lose is the nickname
file (the thing that controls auto suggestion/completes) and that will
rebuild over time.
