Compressed (Zipped) Folders

I have Windows Vista, Word 2003. I inadvertently tried to open a
compressed folder of photo's, using Windows Photo Gallery. Now all my
compressed folder icons have changed to a Windows Photo Gallery icon
(corrupted?) and will not open. I have deleted them all. I notice
that my Desktop Selector Tool icon has also changed. What can I do?
Otherwise my computer is working fine.
