Constraints

In Microsoft Projects 2003, the standard default for the
Constraints field is "As soon as possible." When I create
a new Project (create a new project file), the default is
correct. However, when I add a subtask to an existing Task
that has no constraints in place other than the system
default, the subtasks are incorrectly defaulting to "Start
No Earlier Than." Why is this occurring?

Hi Susie,
The most frequent reason for a "Start No Earlier Than"
constraint is typing in the start date field for the
task. Are you typing in the start date?

Hi Susie,

Sorry to slightly disagree with Julie.
IMHO the most frequent reason for a SNET constrainti sthe optieon
"New tasks strat on current date"
Indeed, the only way Project knows to put a start date othert han the
project start date is a constraint!
Reset the option to "New tasks start on Project Start date" and no new
constraints will appear.

Jan.
I have seen your reply to Susie and I think this is correct but I am using Project 2000, I have changed to "New projects start on project start date" but I still get a constraint. I may have set it as a default at some point and then back again but I just cannot get round this problem
Any ideaS
Pete

Hi Pete,

You say you set the other option. Beware, even if you set it with the
command "Set as Default" that only means irt applies to new projects.
Existing projects keep the option. Verify wha)ich is the option in the
Project you egt teh constraints in.

Also, if you enter start dates for individual tasks instead of letting
Project calculate them for you, a SNET constraint is automatically set.
