Duration vs. Start / Finish

I am wondering if it is possible in MS Project 2002 to set a duration time
like 4h that will not affect the Start and Finish dates. I have a resource
that will need 4h to complete a task but it can be completed anytime during a
1 week time span. So what I want is to put 4h? in the duration field and the
set the Start date to Mon 8/29/05 and the Finish date to Fri 9/2/05. Can
this be done?

No, but you're confusing Duration and Work. You can have a duration of 1w
with as resource doing 4h of work in that week.

The thing to get right is Units. Units=Work/Duration. So, 4h work in one 40h
week =4/40 =1/10=.1 or 10%

Display the assign resources dialog, select your task then enter 10% against
the resource you want assigned.

Select Window, Split and you will see in the lower half the work and units
for the assignment.
