Colin

I've downloaded the onenote.exe trial from the ms website and it seems that
no matter what the installation fails with a fatal error.

This is a new pc that's was just installed from the Windows XP Pro. SP1
release cd.
I installed Office Pro 2003. Visio Pro 2003, and Project standard 2003.
Then I did a microsoft update, downloaded and installed the 51 recommended
patches (as of today at least :).

Finally I attempted to install OneNote and it failed. In the logfile (see
below) it references Error 0x8007000f Failed to get download cache path.

Looking at the top of the log i don't have a cache drive defined... how do i
do that?

Doing a quick google gets me lots of unhappy folks that also can't install
OneNote.
Is this product worth the pain? Any suggestions for a cleaner install?

Hi Colin,
This is a new pc that's was just installed from the Windows XP Pro. SP1
release cd.
I installed Office Pro 2003. Visio Pro 2003, and Project standard 2003.
Then I did a microsoft update, downloaded and installed the 51 recommended
patches (as of today at least :).
I presume SP2 was among them?
Finally I attempted to install OneNote and it failed. In the logfile (see
below) it references Error 0x8007000f Failed to get download cache path.

Looking at the top of the log i don't have a cache drive defined... how do
i
do that?
I don't think it is referring to a cache drive, but rather to the folder
MSOCache that contains a cached copy of your Office install sources. Did you
delete that folder?
Did you install any updates for Office 2003 (using Microsoft Update instead
of Windows Update)?
Doing a quick google gets me lots of unhappy folks that also can't install
OneNote.
Is this product worth the pain? Any suggestions for a cleaner install?
Absolutely :) It is a fantastic product.

I personally had never trouble installing OneNote. Maybe one of the ON MVPs
has seen this error message before?

Aloha Colin,

Hmm...it's been a while since I had to troubleshoot one of these. My first
suggestion would be to delete the download, clear your temporary Internet
files, and try to download it again. It's possible that it got corrupted
a bit on the download.
