Excel closing when entering = in one file then trying to select a

A colleague has a problem when entering = into a cell in a spreadsheet and
then accessing another excel file to select a cell to complete the
calculation. Each time he does this Excel closes down with standard error
message of Microsoft Office Excel has encountered a problem and needs to
close. Any idea what is wrong ?
