Exporting XML From Project for import to Access

S

sprout

Greetings,

Not sure if this post should be in Access or Project, so I apologize in
advance if I am in the wrong area.

I am attempting to import data that was created as XML via MS Project -
2007. Specifically, I need information stored in the Text1-30 data in my
project plan. I can see the data I need in the <ExtendedAttribute> block in
the XML document. However, the <Value>'s associated are not coming into
Access as the column is not created in Access 2007. In addition, there is
no key information to reference back to the task to which Text1-30 would be
associated with.

Any help would be appreciated. (sure wish the Save As .mdb was still an
option...)

Hello Sprout,

In quick testing, you can get some of the information in an MS Project
file (including Text1 field data) through the reporting database. You
can save the reporting database as an Access file from within MS
Project.

Go to Reports > Visual Reports and click the Save Data button in the
lower part of the dialog box.

Select a cube to save.

Note: I've had the best luck using the Task Summary cube or the
Resource Usage Cube depending upon what type of data I am trying to
get.

Click the Field Picker button and select the custom fields (Text1
etc.) you would like to show in the access database.

Click the Save Database button to save the reporting database as an
Access file. Click the close button after the successful save.

Open the saved file in Access and open the query named
"MSP_EpmTask_OlapView". The query appears to show the first 255
characters in the custom fields.

You can create some reports to pull together the task name field, task
id field and text data.

Again, this was just me running some quick testing, so there may be
flaws I haven't found yet :)

I hope this helps. Let us know how you get along.
